Cinder Cone Trail hike
Trek to the top of an extinct volcano in Snow Canyon for a unique perspective of the surrounding black lava flows and red rock.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for approximately 90 minutes to two hours to complete the 1.5-mile round-trip trek at a steady pace.
- 2Wear sturdy hiking boots with aggressive tread to navigate the loose, slippery volcanic scoria on the steep ascent.
- 3Access the trailhead from the pull-off on the west side of State Route 18, located just north of the Snow Canyon State Park main entrance.
- 4Pack at least one liter of water per person, as the exposed black rock absorbs heat and provides no shade.
- 5Bring a light windbreaker for the summit, as the top of the cone is significantly more exposed and gusty than the base.
- 6Walk around the entire rim of the crater once you reach the top for a 360-degree view of the white and red Navajo sandstone layers.
