Hike the Scout Lookout Trail

HikingChallengingSpringYear-roundWinter

A steep switchback climb offering the most iconic panoramic views of Zion Canyon without the technical requirement of the final Angels Landing spine.

Itinerary tips

  • 1Board the Zion Canyon Shuttle at the Visitor Center and disembark at Stop 6, The Grotto, to access the trailhead.
  • 2Budget 2 to 4 hours for the round-trip hike, as the 1,000-foot elevation gain over Walter’s Wiggles is physically demanding.
  • 3Pack at least two liters of water and electrolyte snacks, as there are no refill stations once you leave the trailhead at the canyon floor.
  • 4Wear footwear with aggressive tread to handle the slickrock sections and steep gradients near the summit.
  • 5No permit is required to reach Scout Lookout, but you must have a pre-awarded permit to proceed past the chains to Angels Landing.
  • 6Use the restrooms at The Grotto shuttle stop before starting, as there are very limited facilities at the top of the ridge.
