• 1Apply for the seasonal or day-before permit lottery via Recreation.gov as rangers strictly check for authorization at Scout Lookout.
• 2Plan for a 4 to 5 hour round-trip journey covering five miles with significant elevation gain and exposed cliff edges.
• 3Pack at least three liters of water and high-energy snacks, as there are no refill stations once you leave the Grotto trailhead.
• 4Board the first Zion Canyon Shuttle of the morning from the Visitor Center to reach the trailhead before the most intense sun and crowds arrive.
• 5Wear footwear with aggressive tread and deep lugs to maintain traction on the slickrock sections and near the chain-assisted portions.
• 6Check the local weather forecast specifically for lightning or high winds, as the exposed spine of the ridge is extremely dangerous during storms.
