Explore the Petrified Dunes of Snow Canyon
Scramble across massive rolling mounds of ancient frozen sand that glow deep orange and red against the crisp blue November sky.
Itinerary tips
- 1Aim to spend 1.5 to 2 hours here to allow time for both the marked trail and off-trail scrambling atop the dunes.
- 2Wear shoes with high-traction rubber outsoles, such as approach shoes or trail runners, to safely grip the steep sandstone slopes.
- 3Enter through the South Gate and use the Upper Galoot parking area for the most direct access to the dune formations.
- 4Carry at least one liter of water per person, as the exposed rock reflects heat even during the cooler autumn months.
- 5Pay the Utah State Park vehicle fee at the entrance station or use the self-pay kiosk if arriving during off-hours.
- 6Download an offline map or use a GPS app, as it is easy to lose your bearings once you wander deep into the unmarked mounds.
