Climb at Chuckwalla Wall
Scale the sun-warmed sandstone of this popular sport-climbing crag located just minutes from downtown St. George in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for a 3-4 hour session as the approach is a very short five-minute walk from the parking area.
- 2Bring a 60-meter rope and at least 12 quickdraws to cover the majority of sport routes on the wall.
- 3Park at the designated Chuckwalla Trailhead off Highway 18; no permits are required, but the lot fills quickly on weekends.
- 4Pack plenty of water and sunblock even in winter, as the black-varnished sandstone absorbs and radiates significant heat.
- 5Check the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve website for occasional seasonal raptor closures that may affect specific routes.
- 6Download digital topos on Mountain Project beforehand since cell service can be spotty at the base of the wall.
