Canyoneering through Yankee Doodle Hollow
A perfect introductory slot canyon in the Dixie National Forest featuring exciting rappels and narrow corridors that stay comfortable in the October sun.
Itinerary tips
- 1Pack a 100-foot rope and standard rappelling gear for the three main drops, the largest being approximately 40 feet.
- 2Allocate 3 to 4 hours for the round trip, including the short uphill hike back to the rim road.
- 3Access the trailhead via the graded gravel Denmark Road off Highway 18; a high-clearance vehicle is recommended but not always required.
- 4Park in the pullout marked by a large juniper tree and a small cairn near the start of the drainage.
- 5Verify that no permits are currently required, but check local Dixie National Forest alerts for recent flash flood debris or road washouts.
- 6Wear long sleeves and pants to protect against abrasive sandstone walls and thorny brush during the approach.
