Walk the Cassidy Arch Trail
Climb high above the Grand Wash to stand on a massive natural stone bridge named after the outlaw Butch Cassidy. The lack of shade makes this a perfect sunny hike for the cooler October weather.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for 2.5 to 3.5 hours to complete the 3.4-mile round trip, accounting for the steep initial elevation gain.
- 2Access the trailhead via the Grand Wash Road off Highway 24, but check local weather first as this road is prone to flash flood closures.
- 3No additional permit is required beyond the standard Capitol Reef National Park entrance fee or a valid Interagency Pass.
- 4Wear footwear with excellent grip, as the final stretch involves walking across steep, slanted sandstone sections.
- 5Bring at least two liters of water per person, as there is zero shade once you leave the wash floor.
- 6Look for the 'Arch' sign at the top to find the spur trail that leads you directly onto the top of the natural bridge for a photo.
