Stargaze at Antelope Island State Park
Drive across the causeway to this Dark Sky Park to see the Milky Way reflect off the still, salty waters of the Great Salt Lake.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan to arrive at the park at least one hour before sunset to navigate the causeway and secure a prime viewing spot at Buffalo Point or Ladyfinger Lookout.
- 2Bring a powerful insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin, as brine flies and gnats are prevalent near the shoreline during warmer months.
- 3Pack a portable camping chair, a red-light flashlight to preserve your night vision, and plenty of water since services are limited after dark.
- 4Pay the vehicle entrance fee at the ranger station or via the self-pay kiosk if arriving after hours, and ensure your gas tank is at least half full.
- 5Download a stargazing app and offline maps before you arrive, as cellular reception is inconsistent across the island's interior.
- 6Allow for a total duration of 3 to 4 hours to include the scenic drive, sunset viewing, and at least two hours of astronomical observation.
