Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for a 2-3 hour excursion to allow for paddle time and rinsing your gear of salt deposits afterwards.
- 2Bring a jug of fresh water to rinse your skin and equipment immediately upon exiting the water to prevent salt crusting.
- 3Drive 20 minutes west of downtown SLC to the Great Salt Lake State Park where you will need to pay a small vehicle entrance fee.
- 4Wear polarized sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat to combat the intense glare reflecting off the white salt and water.
- 5Pack high-deet insect repellent to protect against the brine flies and midges that congregate near the shoreline during warmer months.
- 6Check the wind forecast before launching, as the shallow lake can develop choppy, dangerous waves very rapidly.
