Stargazing at Zion’s Kolob Canyons
Drive to the higher elevation finger canyons for exceptionally dark skies and a brilliant view of the Milky Way away from city lights.
Itinerary tips
- 1Pack a portable chair, a red-light headlamp to preserve night vision, and plenty of warm layers as high-elevation temperatures drop quickly after sunset.
- 2Allocate at least two hours for your visit to allow your eyes 20 minutes to fully adjust to the darkness for optimal Milky Way viewing.
- 3Drive to the very end of the five-mile Kolob Canyons Road to the Timber Creek Overlook for the most expansive horizon views.
- 4Ensure your vehicle has a valid Zion National Park pass or digital entrance receipt, as the park entrance station is located just off I-15 at exit 40.
- 5Download an offline star map app before heading up, as cellular reception is extremely limited within the deep finger canyons.
- 6Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to secure a parking spot and enjoy the 'Golden Hour' glow on the crimson Navajo sandstone cliffs.
