Explore the Snow Canyon Sand Dunes
Walk through rolling hills of fine, burnt-orange sand surrounded by ancient black lava flows and petrified dunes.
Itinerary tips
- 1Enter the park through the South Entrance and use the dedicated sand dunes parking lot located just past the Lower Galoot picnic area.
- 2Plan for 45 to 90 minutes to explore the dunes, though photography enthusiasts may want extra time for the shifting light.
- 3Wear closed-toe shoes to prevent the fine volcanic-enriched sand from irritating your feet or becoming too hot during midday sun.
- 4Pay the Utah State Park vehicle entry fee at the gate or use a current Utah State Parks annual pass for admission.
- 5Bring at least one liter of water per person even for this short walk, as the reflection of the sun off the orange sand increases dehydration risks.
- 6Walk toward the northern edge of the dunes to find the best contrast between the soft orange sand and the jagged black basalt lava flows.
