Itinerary tips

• 1Apply for the Zion backcountry permit online up to two months in advance as this high-demand route sells out quickly.
• 2Allocate 4 to 6 hours for the full technical descent and the arduous hike back up to your vehicle.
• 3Rent a 7mm wetsuit and neoprene socks from an outfitter in Springdale, even in summer, as the canyon holds frigid standing water.
• 4Bring a minimum of two 60-meter ropes to ensure you can safely navigate the final 100-foot free rappel into the cathedral.
• 5Park one shuttle vehicle at the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel bottom switchback to avoid a long walk in the sun after exiting.
