Hike high above the Grand Wash to stand on a massive natural bridge named after the legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete the 3.4-mile round-trip hike, including time for photos on the arch.
- 2Access the trailhead by driving to the end of Grand Wash Road, a scenic dirt road suitable for most passenger vehicles.
- 3Carry at least two liters of water and wear shoes with excellent grip to navigate the steep, slickrock switchbacks safely.
- 4Download an offline map or GPS track as the trail markers on the open sandstone plateaus can be difficult to spot.
- 5No special permits are required beyond the standard Capitol Reef National Park entrance fee or a valid Interagency Pass.
- 6Combine this hike with the flat Grand Wash trail stroll afterward to cool down in the deep canyon narrows.
