Hike to Cassidy Arch
Climb high above the Grand Wash to stand on a massive natural stone arch named after the outlaw Butch Cassidy, who allegedly hid out here.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete the 3.4-mile round-trip trek.
- 2Access the trailhead via Grand Wash Road, a scenic dirt spur off Highway 24 that is usually passable for all vehicle types.
- 3Carry at least two liters of water and wear shoes with aggressive tread, as the trail involves steep switchbacks and slickrock traverses.
- 4Arrive at the Grand Wash parking lot before 9:00 AM to secure a spot, as this is one of Capitol Reef's most popular routes.
- 5Look for the cairns (small rock piles) to stay on the path once the trail transitions from dirt to solid sandstone.
- 6Check the weather forecast for flash flood warnings before entering the wash, even if you are hiking to the high ground.
