Hike Cassidy Arch in Capitol Reef
HikingModerateSpringYear-round
Climb high above the Grand Wash to stand on top of a massive natural stone arch named after the outlaw Butch Cassidy.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for a 3.4-mile round trip hike that typically takes 2 to 3 hours depending on your pace and photo stops.
- 2Access the trailhead by driving down the scenic Grand Wash Road, a graded dirt path suitable for most passenger vehicles.
- 3Wear sturdy hiking boots with excellent grip as the final approach requires walking across steep, slanted slickrock.
- 4Pack at least two liters of water and salty snacks, as there is absolutely no shade once you begin the ascent from the canyon floor.
- 5Download offline maps or carry a physical guide because GPS signals are unreliable within the deep sandstone walls of Grand Wash.
- 6Look for the cairns (small rock piles) to navigate the upper sections where the trail follows open rock rather than a dirt path.
