Explore Capitol Reef's Scenic Drive
Drive through the heart of Capitol Reef's Waterpocket Fold, offering stunning geological formations and fruit orchards. Stop at overlooks and short hiking trails.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for approximately 90 minutes to two hours to complete the 16-mile round-trip drive including stops at the major overlooks.
- 2Pack plenty of water and sun protection, as the high desert climate remains dry and intense even during the cooler months.
- 3Pick up a self-guided driving tour brochure at the Visitor Center before heading south toward the fee station.
- 4Continue past the paved section onto the unpaved Grand Wash or Capitol Gorge roads to see the 'Pioneer Register' carved into the canyon walls.
- 5Bring a few small bills or a credit card to purchase fresh local pies or seasonal fruit from the historic Gifford House near the start of the drive.
- 6Download offline maps ahead of time because cellular service is virtually non-existent once you enter the Waterpocket Fold.
