Drive Scenic Byway 12
Journey along one of America's most scenic roads, traversing diverse landscapes from red rock canyons to high mountain forests. Numerous viewpoints and trails await.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for a minimum of 4 to 6 hours to cover the 124-mile route, allowing time for frequent photo stops and short walks.
- 2Download offline maps and music before departing, as cell service is non-existent across the Hogsback and Grand Staircase sections.
- 3Gas up your vehicle in Bryce Canyon City or Torrey, as services are extremely limited and expensive between Boulder and Escalante.
- 4Stop at the Kiva Coffeehouse for a mid-drive break to enjoy panoramic views of the Escalante River canyons from their outdoor deck.
- 5Pack layers of clothing to prepare for significant temperature shifts as the road climbs from 4,000 feet to over 9,000 feet at Boulder Mountain.
- 6Secure a permit at the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center if you plan to hike off-road into the backcountry of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
