Canyoneering in Leprechaun Canyon
AdventureChallengingSpringYear-round
Enter the North Wash for a technical or semi-technical descent into some of the tightest and most photogenic 'corkscrew' slots in Southern Utah.
Itinerary tips
- 1Pack a high-quality headlamp even for midday trips, as the deepest sections of the 'Belfry' and main fork receive almost zero sunlight.
- 2Allow four to six hours to complete the loop, accounting for slow movement through the extremely narrow 'shimmy' sections.
- 3Park at the large dirt pull-off on the east side of Highway 95 near mile marker 28.1, which serves as the primary access point for the North Wash.
- 4Wear old, durable clothing or a canvas jumpsuit because the abrasive 'sandpaper' walls will shred standard hiking gear and technical fabrics.
- 5Carry a 30-meter rope and basic rappelling gear if you intend to descend the technical Left Fork, though the Right Fork can be explored as an up-and-back scramble.
- 6Download offline topographic maps before leaving Hanksville or Hite, as there is absolutely no cellular service once you enter the canyon system.
