Search for Bison on Antelope Island
Drive across the causeway to the Great Salt Lake’s largest island to see free-roaming bison, pronghorn, and dramatic desert landscapes.
Itinerary tips
- 1Bring a camera with a telephoto lens to capture the bison herds safely from the recommended 25-yard distance.
- 2Allocate at least three to four hours to include the scenic drive to Fielding Garr Ranch and the Buffalo Point overlook.
- 3Pay the state park entry fee at the Syracuse causeway gate, as the America the Beautiful federal pass is not accepted here.
- 4Pack heavy-duty insect repellent if visiting between April and June when biting gnats are most active near the shoreline.
- 5Download an offline map or grab a paper guide at the Visitor Center since cellular reception can be spotty on the south end of the island.
- 6Check the park's social media or website for the annual Bison Roundup dates in late October to see the entire herd gathered in one area.
