Hike the Living Room Trail at Sunset
Climb to a ridge overlooking the valley where hikers have arranged flat sandstone rocks into chairs and sofas for a panoramic view of the city lights.
Itinerary tips
- 1Park at the Natural History Museum of Utah trailhead, but ensure you arrive early as spaces fill quickly before dusk.
- 2Allocate at least two hours for the round-trip hike to allow for lingering at the rock chairs while the sun sets.
- 3Pack a headlamp or a fully charged phone light, as the descent becomes dark and rocky immediately after the sun disappears.
- 4Bring a light windbreaker or jacket, because the ridge becomes significantly cooler and windier than the trailhead once the sun is down.
- 5Follow the red-rock markings and GPS closely at junctions to avoid wandering onto the many intersecting game trails.
- 6Carry at least one liter of water per person, as the trail is entirely exposed with no shade during the ascent.
