Hike Ensign Peak Trail

ScenicModerateSpringSummerFall

Enjoy a relatively short but rewarding hike to a historic viewpoint overlooking Salt Lake City. Offers stunning vistas of the valley and Great Salt Lake.

Itinerary tips

  • 1Plan for 45 to 60 minutes round-trip to cover the 1-mile trail and spend time at the monument.
  • 2Bring a liter of water and wear sunblock, as the entire trail is fully exposed with zero shade.
  • 3Park for free at the designated trailhead lot located at the top of North Hills Drive in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.
  • 4Wear sturdy athletic shoes or hiking boots to handle the steep, gravelly sections that can be slippery on the descent.
  • 5Extend your walk by continuing past the monument to the true summit for a quieter experience and 360-degree views of the Wasatch Range.
  • 6Download an offline map, though cell service is generally reliable throughout the hike due to its proximity to the city.
