• 1Secure a high-clearance 4WD vehicle with a low-range transfer case, as standard AWD SUVs may struggle with the steep grades and loose rock.
• 2Allocate at least 3 to 4 hours to complete the descent from Island in the Sky to the Potash Road connection at a safe pace.
• 3Download offline maps or carry a physical topographical map, as cellular reception is non-existent once you drop below the canyon rim.
• 4Pack a portable air compressor to lower tire pressure for traction at the trailhead and reinflate before returning to paved highways.
• 5Check the National Park Service website for recent washouts and current road conditions before departing Moab, as heavy rains can make the trail impassable.
• 6Carry at least one gallon of water per person and a full-sized spare tire, as vehicle recovery services in this area are extremely expensive.
