Explore the Fiery Furnace

OutdoorModerateSpringFall

Navigate a labyrinth of narrow sandstone canyons and hidden arches on a ranger-led hike or with a self-guided permit.

Itinerary tips

  • 1Book your ranger-led tour or self-guided permit exactly 56 days in advance on Recreation.gov to ensure a spot.
  • 2Wear high-traction hiking boots or approach shoes to safely navigate the steep, slickrock slopes and narrow slots.
  • 3Allocate a minimum of three to four hours to explore the complex loops without the risk of getting lost before dusk.
  • 4Carry at least two liters of water and high-energy snacks, as there are no facilities or water stations within the maze.
  • 5Download an offline GPS map or study the physical landmarks carefully since there are no trail markers inside the canyon.
  • 6Watch a mandatory orientation video at the Arches Visitor Center to receive your physical permit before heading to the trailhead.
