Sunset at Dead Horse Point State Park

Itinerary tips

• 1Arrive at least 45 minutes before the scheduled sunset to secure a parking spot at the main Dead Horse Point overlook.
• 2Pack a high-quality headlamp or flashlight for the short walk back to your vehicle after the horizon light fades on the trails.
• 3Pay the $25 per-vehicle state park entrance fee at the gate or use your Utah State Parks pass, as federal Interagency passes are not accepted here.
• 4Bring a windbreaker or light jacket even in summer, as the rim becomes significantly colder and windier once the sun drops.
• 5Follow the East Rim Trail for a few hundred yards to find smaller limestone outcroppings away from the main observation platform crowds.
• 6Stay for the 'blue hour' roughly 20 minutes after sunset when the canyon depths glow with intense purple and deep orange hues.
