Hike to the Old Ephraim's Grave
HikingModerateSummerYear-round
Pay respects at the monument for the last legendary grizzly bear of the Rockies, tucked deep in the backcountry.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for a 10-mile round-trip trek if hiking from the Temple Fork trailhead, or use a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle to reach the closer trailhead at Right Fork.
- 2Download offline topographic maps before leaving Logan, as cell service is nonexistent once you enter the dense forest of the canyon.
- 3Bring at least three liters of water and high-protein snacks, as the steady elevation gain makes this a four to six-hour commitment.
- 4Pack bear spray as a precaution; while Old Ephraim is gone, the area remains active habitat for black bears and moose.
- 5Look for the massive stone monument marking the gravesite, which stands exactly the same height as the legendary 9-foot-11-inch grizzly.
- 6Stop at the local Gossner Foods in Logan on your way out to grab shelf-stable cheese curds, the traditional local snack for this specific trail.
