Itinerary tips
- 1Rent your canoe or kayak at Stokes Nature Center or a local Logan outfitter since there are no rental facilities directly at the river banks.
- 2Launch from the bridge on Highway 89 south of Logan or the Mendon Road access point for the most scenic, slow-moving stretches.
- 3Allocate 2 to 4 hours for a round-trip paddle, accounting for the gentle current that requires effort when returning upstream.
- 4Pack binoculars and a birding guide to identify the cranes, herons, and pelicans that frequent the willow-lined shores.
- 5Apply waterproof sunblock and wear a wide-brimmed hat, as the river valley offers very little natural shade during midday hours.
- 6Check local water levels online before heading out, as late summer agricultural irrigation can occasionally lead to shallow sections.
