Utah family vacation

Two basecamps, two very different trips: Park City for mountains and snow, St. George for red rock and warm weather. Below are the itineraries we actually give guests — plus homes with room for everyone, bookable direct.

Looking for things to do in Utah with kids? Our family hub has seasonal activity ideas and kid-friendly guides for every destination we cover.

Pick your basecamp

Mountains · Ski + summer

Park City

35 minutes from the Salt Lake City airport, so you can land and be in the hot tub by dinner. Ski school in winter, alpine slides and mountain biking in summer, and a walkable Main Street that keeps teenagers happy.

Ages 4+ · Nov–Mar for snow, Jun–Sep for the alpine coaster

A 3-day outline

  1. Day 1 — Land in Salt Lake, drive up, walk Main Street, ride the free town lift.
  2. Day 2 — Ski school or the Alpine Slide at Park City Mountain, early dinner, hot tub.
  3. Day 3 — Utah Olympic Park bobsled + museum, then Swaner Preserve boardwalk to burn off the rest.

Storm or rain day: Olympic Park's indoor museum and the Park City Library make an easy two-hour reset.

Red rock · Warm all winter

St. George

Southern Utah's warm-weather basecamp and the closest town to Zion. Short, stroller-tolerant trails, dinosaur tracks, and pools that are usable in February — this is the trip for families who don't want to pack snow gear.

All ages · Mar–May and Sep–Nov are the comfortable months

A 3-day outline

  1. Day 1 — Arrive, Pioneer Park's slot-canyon scramble at golden hour, pizza in town.
  2. Day 2 — Zion (40 min): Riverside Walk and Pa'rus Trail, both flat and shuttle-accessible.
  3. Day 3 — St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site, then Sand Hollow's red sand beach and shallow water.

Too hot? Flip the day — trails before 10am, pool from noon, museums mid-afternoon.

What families ask before booking

How many days do you need for a Utah family vacation?
Five to seven days is the sweet spot for one region. Three days is enough for Park City or St. George on its own; if you want both, plan on eight or more because the drive between them is roughly 4.5 hours.
What is the best time of year to visit Utah with kids?
March through May and September through November are the most comfortable statewide. Southern Utah is pleasant all winter, while Park City is at its best from December to March for snow and June to September for alpine activities.
Can you drive between Park City and St. George in one trip?
Yes. It is about 300 miles on I-15, roughly 4.5 hours without stops. Most families break it up with a night in Salt Lake City or a lunch stop in Beaver.
Do you need a national park pass?
If you plan to visit two or more parks, the annual America the Beautiful pass pays for itself. Zion alone charges per vehicle for seven days, and fourth-graders travel free through the Every Kid Outdoors program.
Are Utah trails manageable with young kids?
Many are. Zion's Pa'rus and Riverside Walk are flat and paved or hard-packed, and Park City's rail-trail sections work with a stroller. We flag the stroller-friendly options inside each destination guide.
