Traverse the Canyons via Scenic Byway 12
Drive one of America’s most beautiful roads, crossing 'The Hogback'—a narrow strip of asphalt with steep drops into spectacular sandstone drainage on both sides.
Itinerary tips
- 1Allocate a minimum of four to six hours for the drive to account for frequent photo stops and short walks at overlooks like Kiva Coffeehouse.
- 2Download offline maps and music playlists before leaving Torrey or Bryce, as cellular service is non-existent for the majority of the route.
- 3Fill your fuel tank completely in either Escalante or Boulder, as gas stations are sparse and often closed after sunset.
- 4Pack a cooler with plenty of water and food since dining options are limited to a few seasonal cafes in small towns along the way.
- 5Stop at the Head of the Rocks Overlook to see the vast expanse of the Escalante Canyons before you descend into the valley.
- 6Check the local weather forecast for high winds or snow, as The Hogback section can be intimidating during inclement weather due to lack of guardrails.
