Drive Scenic Byway 12 through The Hogback
ScenicEasyYear-round
Experience 'The All-American Road' as it traverses a razor-thin ridge with steep canyons falling away on either side of the pavement.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for at least three to four hours to drive the full 124 miles, as the winding terrain and photo stops significantly increase travel time.
- 2Ensure your gas tank is full before leaving Escalante or Boulder, as there are no service stations along the high-altitude stretch of The Hogback.
- 3Download offline maps and music beforehand because cellular reception is non-existent for most of the route between towns.
- 4Utilize the designated pull-outs on either side of the ridge for photos rather than stopping on the narrow shoulder of the road.
- 5Pack a light jacket even in summer, as the elevation quickly climbs to over 9,000 feet near Boulder Mountain.
- 6Visit the Kiva Coffeehouse nearby for a break with panoramic views of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
