Explore the Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter
OutdoorEasyYear-round
Walk the 1,200-acre high-altitude wetland on an elevated boardwalk to spot Sandhill Cranes, elk, and migrating birds.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for approximately 90 minutes to walk the boardwalk and explore the interactive exhibits inside the EcoCenter.
- 2Bring a pair of binoculars or borrow them from the front desk to better spot nesting Sandhill Cranes in the reeds.
- 3Park for free in the designated lot at Newpark Town Center, which offers direct access to the preserve's main entrance.
- 4Wear waterproof shoes if you plan to explore the peripheral dirt trails, as the wetland environment can stay muddy even in summer.
- 5Pack a light jacket regardless of the season, as the high-altitude wind across the open basin is often colder than in town.
- 6Visit the pier at sunset for the best lighting to photograph the contrast between the wetlands and the Olympic Park mountains.
