Drive the Guardsman Pass Scenic Byway

ScenicEasySummerYear-round

Wind through towering stands of golden aspens and scrub oaks on this high-mountain pass connecting Park City to Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Itinerary tips

  • 1Allocate at least 60 to 90 minutes to complete the drive, as the narrow, winding roads require a slower pace and frequent photo stops.
  • 2Ensure your vehicle has a full tank of gas and reliable brakes, as there are no service stations along the steep mountain grade.
  • 3Download offline maps or print a physical route guide because cellular service is extremely spotty once you reach the summit.
  • 4Pack a light jacket or windbreaker even in summer, as temperatures at the 9,700-foot summit are significantly cooler than in downtown Park City.
  • 5Utilize the small pull-offs at the summit for panoramic views of the Heber Valley and Brighton Bowl without blocking traffic.
  • 6Avoid bringing oversized RVs or trailers, as the tight switchbacks on the Big Cottonwood Canyon side are not suitable for large vehicles.
