Drive the Potash Road Scenic Byway
Trace the Colorado River past ancient petroglyphs and towering sandstone walls on a paved route that offers massive views without the crowds.
Itinerary tips
- 1Plan for at least two to three hours to allow for frequent stops at archaeological sites and photo turnouts.
- 2Bring a pair of binoculars to spot climbers on the 'Wall Street' cliffs and to see high-elevation petroglyph panels.
- 3Pack plenty of water and snacks as there are no gas stations or convenience stores once you leave the Highway 191 junction.
- 4Download an offline map or grab a paper guide because cellular service drops off almost immediately upon entering the canyon.
- 5Stop at the marked 'Petroglyphs' pullout about 5 miles in to see the ancient Ute and Fremont rock art located right along the roadside.
- 6Continue to the end of the pavement at the Intrepid Potash evaporation ponds to witness the striking contrast of electric blue water against the red desert.
